Job Description: Cover Supervisor
Temping Agency is partnering with several highly-regarded secondary schools and academies across the Middlesbrough TS1 area to recruit dedicated Cover Supervisors. This is a pivotal role within the education sector, providing essential classroom management and continuity of learning during teacher absences. If you are a resilient, organised individual with a passion for supporting young people's education, this represents a fantastic opportunity to gain invaluable school-based experience with the potential for a permanent contract.
Unlike generic temporary roles, a Cover Supervisor position offers structured, meaningful work. You will be at the heart of the school day, ensuring pupils remain engaged and on-task. For those considering a future in teaching, this role serves as perfect classroom experience. For seasoned cover staff, it offers the stability of regular work through a trusted local agency. We manage the admin, payroll, and liaison, allowing you to focus on the job. Whether you're looking for immediate start jobs or a stepping stone in education, this role is tailored for you.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Classroom Management: Supervise whole classes across various subjects during the short-term absence of the assigned teacher, ensuring a positive and productive learning environment.
- Delivery of Pre-Set Work: Effectively deliver and explain lesson plans and work set by the absent teacher, following school policies and procedures to the letter.
- Behaviour Management: Manage student behaviour in line with the school's behaviour policy, promoting respect and resolving low-level issues promptly and appropriately.
- Support & Guidance: Provide academic support and guidance to students as they complete tasks, answering questions and clarifying instructions without teaching new concepts.
- Administrative Tasks: Complete necessary administrative duties such as registering student attendance, collecting completed work, and providing brief feedback on the lesson for the returning teacher.
- Safeguarding: Maintain a vigilant awareness of student welfare, adhering strictly to the school's safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
- Resource Management: Ensure classroom resources and equipment are used appropriately and left in good order at the end of the lesson.
Essential Requirements & Person Specification
To be successful in this Cover Supervisor role in Middlesbrough, you will need a specific blend of soft skills, resilience, and foundational knowledge. We are looking for candidates who can hit the ground running.
- Proven Experience: Previous experience working with children or young adults in an educational, youth work, or supervisory capacity is essential. This could be as a Teaching Assistant, Tutor, Youth Worker, or in a similar supervisory role.
- Strong Classroom Presence: The innate ability to command respect, manage behaviour confidently, and maintain authority with groups of secondary school-aged students.
- Excellent Communication: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to give clear instructions and interact professionally with students, teachers, and agency staff.
- Resilience & Adaptability: The capacity to think on your feet, adapt to different subjects and year groups daily, and remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Organisational Skills: Meticulous organisation to manage different lesson plans, registers, and student work across multiple classes.
- Essential Checks: An enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or the willingness to apply for one immediately through Temping Agency. Eligibility to work in the UK without restriction.
While a degree or formal teaching qualification is advantageous, we value practical experience and the right attitude just as highly. This role is also an excellent match for individuals who have thrived in other structured, people-focused temporary roles, such as an Assembly Line Worker requiring focus and process adherence, a Nursery Nurse skilled in child engagement, or a CSCS Labourer accustomed to site discipline and safety protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does a Cover Supervisor do? Is it teaching?
A Cover Supervisor is not a qualified teacher and does not plan lessons or teach new material. Your primary role is to supervise and manage the classroom, ensuring students complete the pre-set work left by their teacher. You maintain order, answer procedural questions, and support learning, but you do not deliver new curriculum content. It's a role centred on management, pastoral care, and ensuring educational continuity.
I don't have a DBS. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can absolutely apply. An Enhanced DBS check is mandatory for working in schools. If you don't have one registered on the Update Service, Temping Agency will guide you through the application process immediately upon your successful registration. We cover the cost and fast-track the application, so it's not a barrier to starting your application today.
Are there opportunities for permanent positions?
Absolutely. Many of our Cover Supervisor placements are initially temporary but are used by schools as a prolonged interview for longer-term or permanent contracts. Excelling in a temporary role is the most common pathway to securing a permanent Cover Supervisor or Teaching Assistant position within a school. We actively support temp-to-perm transitions for our candidates.
What support will I receive from Temping Agency?
You will be assigned a dedicated education consultant who understands the local schools in Middlesbrough. They will provide a full pre-placement briefing, ongoing check-ins, and be your point of contact for any issues. We also offer guidance on classroom management techniques, safeguarding updates, and pay you weekly without fail. Think of us as your professional back-office and advocate.
